About the Organization:

Opened in 2008, and recently re-authorized by the state, Community Charter School of Paterson (CCSP) is a full-service community charter school serving 900 students in grades K-8 and located in the historic district of Paterson, New Jersey.  Our school was founded in close partnership with New Jersey Community Development Corporation, one of New Jersey’s leading community development organizations, with the firm belief that education is an essential component of overall community transformation.

Our model aims to bring the rigorous instructional practices and well-developed systems of high performing charter schools to the community school context, where a wide range of resources, services and partnerships are leveraged to provide comprehensive support to students and families. 

 

About the Opportunity:

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) reports directly to and works in close partnership with the Chief Executive Officer, leading all of the organization’s non-instructional activities.  The COO is responsible for all day to day operations (transportation, facilities, food service, human resources, technology), budgeting and finance, and compliance and regulations.  This position offers a highly impactful opportunity for a seasoned operations and finance professional to work at both grass tops and grass roots, ensuring the school is as efficient, effective and ultimately as high quality and high performing as possible. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

Systems Building and Strategic Planning:

  • In partnership with the CEO, inform the organization-wide strategic plan as it relates to operations, growth, finance and sustainability.
  • Ensure optimal organizational efficiency through the development and oversight of effective, streamlined systems and processes.
  • Develop operational goals aligned to the strategic plan and vision, and accountability structures to track progress toward and ensure achievement of goals.

Day to Day Operations:

  • Directly oversee the management and implementation of service providers and contracts including facilities, transportation, food service and insurance.
  • Ensure CCSP remains complaint with all New Jersey education laws and regulations while developing efficient systems to respond to deadlines and requests.
  • Develop clear and compelling reporting materials required by the New Jersey Department of Education and other stakeholders.
  • Manage the RFP and public bidding process in accordance with state laws, regulations, and Board expectations.

Finance & Budget:

  • Lead the annual budgeting process.
  • Collaborate with the School Business Administrator and support preparation of reports for Board.
  • Ensure accounting functions and team members operate at high level of accountability and integrity.
  • Coordinate and regularly communicate with academic team leaders and Director of Community Schools around their respective budget capabilities, responding to requests, as needed. 

Team Management:

  • Set and oversee the execution of the talent strategy vision for all non-academic team members, including recruitment, selection, onboarding, retention and performance management.
  • Build and develop a high performing operations and finance team.
  • Build the systems and practices to create a strong results oriented office culture that supports all stakeholders including staff, students, parents and community partners.
  • Directly manage the HR Manager, Accounts Receivable and Payable staff and Director of Information Technology.

 

Qualifications:

  • Deep commitment to and/or experience serving under-resourced students and families.
  • Degree in business or accounting preferred.
  • School Business Administrator Certificate preferred, but not required.
  • Minimum of seven years experience in a senior management role in finance and/or operations.
  • Track record of successfully developing the financial and operational systems and teams to support a high performing organization.
  • Strong at both strategic planning, vision setting and implementation/ execution.
  • Demonstrates collaborative, relational leadership approach; strong relationship builder.
  • Proven leadership and management skills with the ability to attract, support and inspire teams to exceptional results.
  • Demonstrated understanding of high performing school operations and planning including, facilities/ real estate, reporting/ compliance and IT.
  • Prior experience as an operations and/or finance leader at a New Jersey-based charter or NJ Public School strongly preferred.
