POSITION SUMMARY

 

Ocean Conservancy is the leading voice for the continued and increased sustained health of our oceans against today’s global challenges. We’re looking for a highly skilled marketing executive to help us promote our work, identify and expand our public support, and synergize our messaging. The ideal candidate will have extensive marketing experience, comprehensive knowledge of branding, and be well versed in digital communications. This person will work closely across the institution to refine our brand, establish communications guidelines, and identify key audiences to help further our mission; they must be able to lead initiatives and their teams with humor, intellect, and a strong sense of cooperative working environment. 

 

Reporting directly to the Chief Communications & Brand Officer, the Vice President is a member of both the Communications and Development leadership teams and acts as the primary touchpoint between departments, helping drive strategic development and alignment for both. Additionally, the Vice President serves as a member of the Executive Team and works closely with other Executive Team members to provide institutional leadership and strategic direction while ensuring alignment and integration of Ocean Conservancy's programs and acts as a resource for other Vice Presidents and departments. 

   

Areas of Leadership

Organizational Leadership: In partnership with key executives, lead on development and execution of a comprehensive vision and strategy for Ocean Conservancy’s Brand and Marketing efforts, including goals and metrics, that integrates ocean justice and includes partnerships with other organizations and key influencers. Collaborate with the Executive Team to uncover insights for developing marketing and branding strategies for Ocean Conservancy’s goals. Build a shared understanding, across the organization, of the purpose and value of brand and marketing to advance the organization’s mission.

Key Qualifications:

  • Senior-level experience in marketing, fundraising/sales, advertising, or communications, including setting, driving, and operationalizing strategy at the organizational level
  • A track record of keeping up with industry best practices and emerging strategies to ensure a competitive edge in brand awareness, acquisition, and retention 
  • Experience as an active partner and driver in organizational diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives
  • Belief in and commitment to Ocean Conservancy’s mission and values, ideally as demonstrated by experience in conservation, and understanding the intersection of conservation and justice

 

Brand and Marketing Strategy: Set Ocean Conservancy up for success in brand positioning and consumer insights, shaping the institution’s key branding pillars, and help translate these pillars into marketing strategies to be deployed by the institution’s communications, fundraising, and advocacy campaigns. Identify short- and long-term strategic plans with clear objectives to develop Ocean Conservancy’s brand and further the institution’s reach to expand fundraising, advocacy, and communications outreach. Develop and oversee implementation of brand building strategies across all channels in collaboration with key colleagues across Ocean Conservancy.

 

Key Qualifications:

  • Successful track record in a senior marketing role in advocacy or fundraising; experience driving an innovative national advocacy/fundraising campaign a strong plus
  • History of brand stewardship within international organizations
  • Proven ability to develop brand and marketing strategies and communicate recommendations to executives
  • Experience in data-driven, metrics based digital and website marketing with a focus on increasing revenue; experience with national audience surveys a strong plus 
  • Proven willingness to take chances and be at the forefront of marketing strategy, whether by type of media or style
 

Management and Implementation: Manage conception, development, and implementation of marketing plans and strategy, campaign/messaging concepts, and promotional programs to drive consumer interest and actions (fundraising or advocacy). Leverage analytics and use a data-driven approach to stay at the forefront of consumer and marketplace trends. Oversee the development and execution of effective work plans, budgets, and revenue projections to ensure success. Provide day-to-day leadership of creative agency partners and staff. Partner with the People and Culture department in the development of effective recruitment approaches. Build an effective Marketing department that supports the professional growth and development of team members and strengthens diversity, equity, and inclusion. 

 

Key Qualifications:

  • Experience directly supervising and managing strong, cohesive, credible teams, including developing and communicating team and individual goals that are tethered to institutional goals
  • Demonstrated history of creating diverse, inclusive and engaged teams, and managing individuals with diverse identities
  • Ability to unite teams, break-down silos and create a positive work environment
  • Track record of centering equity and inclusion as a leader, including when making and communicating decisions
  • History of applying strong analytical skills and a creative mind to drive development of innovative marketing plans, strategies, and concepts
  • Experience building and managing effective partnerships with external vendors/consultants
 

Collaboration: Embrace an institutionalist perspective when crafting strategies, making decisions, and partnering with team members from across the organization. Ensure an integrated and cohesive approach to Ocean Conservancy’s marketing and communications collateral by deepening the alignment between departments. Partner with IT and Digital departments to develop, deploy, and enhance implementation across the program website, digital and social media, email campaigns, SEO/SEM, etc. Partner with other Vice Presidents, to gain traction with strategic partners and in media outlets that play a major role in furthering brand awareness efforts.

  • Demonstrated appreciation of the benefit of a multidisciplinary team approach
  • Outstanding relationship builder, with a track record of building authentic relationships with team members at all levels of an organization
 

Compensation, Benefits, and Location

Ocean Conservancy is committed to equity in its pay practices and posts expected hiring ranges for each of its positions. Salary range is $180,565 to $225,653. Compensation will be commensurate with the candidate’s specialty skills, years of experience, location, and unique background. We would welcome the opportunity to connect with potential candidates whose salary requirements may be outside of the expected hiring range.
