About BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music)

Founded in 1861, the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is the oldest continuously operating performing arts institution in the United States. BAM’s modern-day reputation as the center for progressive art was defined by the Harvey Lichtenstein era (1967-1999). The transformation of BAM continued in the 70’s and 80’s with the introduction of seminal programs - such as, DanceAfrica in 1977, the Next Wave Festival, and Dance Black America in 1983 - all of which expanded the dialogue with the performing arts: cross and interdisciplinary, professional, and amateur, visionary and performing. In every way, BAM was defining what audiences and artists thought of as “new art.”

As one of the city’s core cultural centers, today BAM serves the needs of a vibrant and diverse Brooklyn audience by programming international, national, and local artistic and cultural events. BAM exists as more than a venue for the arts; BAM is a convener of ideas, people, and established and emerging artists coming together, both in person and digitally.

With the appointment of its new President, Gina Duncan, BAM is enthusiastically moving into its next chapter, building on its history and looking ahead at its role as an organization that opens avenues to redefining the concept of what a performing arts organization like BAM is when it is re-centered in relationship to its surrounding community.

BAM operates on a roughly $55 million budget, with core funding from corporate donors, foundations, individuals, and government sources. Funding streams include membership, major gifts, government and philanthropic grants, bequests, and special events. BAM’s devoted Board of Trustees is a diverse mix of New York City’s corporate, civic, cultural, and educational leaders.

BAM continues to serve its home community of Brooklyn, first and foremost, during a moment of continued gentrification and development. As one of the largest institutions in Brooklyn, BAM’s staff, programming, and values mirror the diversity and vitality of the borough, constantly leading at the intersection of contemporary arts and social commentary. Community engagement and education are cornerstones of BAM’s work.
